What is Shockwave Therapy?
Therapy using soundwaves to transfer energy through your body that stimulates a healing response. Shockwave therapeutic effects are attributed to increase cellular activity, new blood vessel formation, connected tissue and nerve remodeling.
What can Shockwave Treat?
There is evidence that shockwave therapy is effective for many common physical complaints including but not limited to the following:
- Plantar fasciitis (Gerdesmyer et al., 2008)
- Tennis elbow (Ludger, 2007)
- Shoulder calcific tendinitis (Cacchio et al., 2006)
- Achilles tendinopathy (Rassmussen et al., 2008)
- Patellar tendinitis (Zwerver et al., 2011)
- Myofascial pain syndrome (Traczewski et al., 2013)
- Chronic pelvic pain syndrome (Wang et al., 2009)
- Osteoarthritis of the knee (Wang et al., 2011)
- Non-specific lower back pain (Rompe et al., 2005)
- Fracture and bone healing (Schaden et al., 2001)
How long does it take?
Typical treatment last 5 minute per area. In that time, we typically deliver 2500 pulses. Most conditions require multiple treatments spaced several days apart to allow your body to heal in between sessions.
During your initial assessment your clinician will evaluate your specific condition to estimate how many treatments you will need. The average treatment plan is 6 visits.
Immediate results may include:
- a significant reduction in pain
- an increase in your range of motion & mobility
- decreased muscle tension
- improved circulation
Is it Effective?
Yes, Shockwave Therapy is an innovative treatment that effectively stimulates the body's natural healing processes. It can provide immediate pain relief, improve mobility, and possibly eliminate the need for surgery.
Is it Safe?
Yes, Shockwave Therapy is safe with no adverse effects when used appropriately. It is not recommended for individuals with coagulation disorders, cancer, child growth plates or pregnant women.
Does it Hurt?
Treatment on soft tissue areas generally cause less discomfort than on boney regions. The first session might be slightly uncomfortable, but it becomes easier with each subsequent treatment. If necessary, the machine's settings can be adjusted to reduce any discomfort.
After treatment Care
Despite feeling better, it's advisable to limit your vigorous activity for 24 hours post-treatment. However, each case is unique, so post-care recommendations vary from patient to patient.
